ebm-papst Deal to Sell Industrial Drive Technology (IDT) Division to Siemens

09/08/2025

ebm-papst Group has revealed its plan to sell its Industrial Drive Technology (IDT) division to Siemens AG, with both companies having inked an agreement to formalize the deal. Following the intended sale to Siemens, IDT will secure access to international markets via a more extensive global sales network—opening up new avenues for innovation and further successful business expansion. All employees of the IDT division will be taken on by Siemens, while the exact transaction price remains undisclosed. The deal is set to close by mid-2025, pending approvals from foreign trade and merger control authorities.

Dr. Klaus Geißdörfer, CEO of ebm-papst Group, noted: “The sale of IDT is part of the steady execution of our corporate strategy ‘Making the Future Together’, which we launched in 2022. Guided by this strategy, ebm-papst aims to focus on our core business—air and heating technology—and speed up the company’s transformation in terms of sustainability, digitalization, and international expansion.”

He added: “We will use the proceeds from the IDT sale to further expand our Air Technology and Heating Technology divisions, strengthen our presence in the three key regions of Europe, APAC/MEA, and the Americas, and invest in future-focused areas such as digitalization and the sustainability of our product portfolio. This will allow us to meet long-term market demand for energy-efficient solutions, especially in growing future markets like data centers, cleanrooms, and heat pumps. At the same time, we are creating promising prospects for our company and employees—including those based at the former IDT locations.”

IDT was established as an independent division in mid-2022, designed to focus on specific market needs without being tied to the requirements of the air and heating technology business.

“The IDT division is highly attractive and boasts significant development potential, particularly on the international stage. We also have technologically leading product solutions and a team of highly skilled employees,” Geißdörfer emphasized. “However, what we have lacked for this division so far is a global sales organization that can unlock its full growth and development potential.”

Raymond Engelbrecht—CCO of the Air Technology Europe division, as well as CEO of the IDT and Automotive divisions and ebm-papst St. Georgen GmbH & Co. KG—added: “The sale to Siemens AG now gives IDT and all its employees access to these excellent international development prospects. Siemens has regarded us as a supplier for years and is well-acquainted with our product offerings. Drives are a core part of Siemens’ portfolio; moreover, the company has strong international market reach, robust sales capabilities, a large customer base in key target markets, and an end-to-end product configurator.”

Cedrik Neike, member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and CEO of Digital Industries, commented: “ebm-papst’s innovative portfolio of mechatronic drive systems and its highly qualified workforce are an excellent match for Siemens. This acquisition will enable us to tap into new business and customer potential in the fast-growing market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot solutions.”

Once the deal closes, Siemens will take on approximately 650 IDT employees based in St. Georgen, Lauf an der Pegnitz, and Oradea (Romania). The works council was involved in the planning process from an early stage and supports the project. Currently, drives are manufactured at the Hagenmoos plant in St. Georgen; production will be relocated to Oradea, leaving the St. Georgen plant to focus solely on fan component manufacturing in the future.

The IDT division specializes in developing, producing, and selling technologically advanced product solutions—including compact, intelligent drive systems, which are also used in automated guided vehicles.
