A Breakthrough in Intelligent Dehumidification: ebm-papst Empowers Vilpe Sense to Protect Building Comfort and Safety
09/03/2025The Vilpe Sense intelligent system, developed by the Finnish company Vilpe, leverages ebm-papst EC centrifugal fans to precisely detect moisture risks on rooftops before they cause water damage. By promptly removing excess moisture, it prevents building damage at the source, providing an innovative solution for creating a comfortable building environment.
Seemingly minor issues can often lead to cascading problems. For example, a small hole in a flat asphalt roof can, if left undetected, allow moisture to seep into the building, gradually forming annoying water damage. Repairing these damages often requires costly renovations. To address this potential problem, the Finnish company Vilpe has developed the Vilpe Sense intelligent system. It monitors moisture levels in a building in real time and proactively initiates drying or ventilation cycles when necessary, nipping the problem in the bud. Vilpe Sense System: Precise Monitoring, Intelligent Response
Vilpe Sense operates with clear and efficient logic: it utilizes two core sensors: one monitors the temperature and relative humidity within the building's insulation layer, while the other records real-time data about the outdoor air. This collected information is transmitted to a control unit, which then uploads it to the Vilpe cloud for professional analysis. If excessive humidity within the insulation layer is detected, the system immediately activates a dual response mechanism: first, a warning notification is sent to the building manager via a dedicated app, ensuring prompt notification. Second, a rooftop fan automatically activates and adjusts its speed based on actual humidity levels, continuing to operate until the building envelope returns to a safe humidity level.
Preventing mold growth and building a strong "moisture barrier"
"Finland's heavy winters increase the risk of roof damage. Furthermore, rooftop installations such as photovoltaic panels, cooling systems, and ventilation equipment further increase the potential for damage," said Veli-Pekka Lahti, Vilpe's Director of Research and Development, explaining the moisture-proofing challenges facing local buildings.
Vilpe Sense goes beyond detecting existing roof damage and also provides moisture-proofing support during the construction phase of new buildings. During construction, if moisture inadvertently seeps into a building, it can easily become a breeding ground for mold growth, making a reliable ventilation system crucial. Furthermore, moisture leaks in the building envelope (such as exterior walls, roof, doors, and windows) can significantly compromise indoor air quality. Vilpe Sense continuously maintains a dry exterior, fundamentally safeguarding indoor air safety.
On-demand intelligent ventilation: balancing efficiency and energy savings
Vilpe Sense's core advantage lies in its intelligent, on-demand operation. The system's built-in intelligent algorithm precisely controls the rooftop fan speed: the fans only activate when sensors detect excessive moisture within the building envelope, avoiding unnecessary energy consumption. The system also dynamically adjusts its operating strategy based on outdoor temperature. In winter, when outdoor temperatures are low, the fan speed is automatically reduced to prevent excessive heat loss. In summer, when roof temperatures rise and moisture needs to evaporate quickly, the speed is increased accordingly, simultaneously removing moisture and excess heat, achieving both moisture-proofing and energy conservation.
ebm-papst RadiCal Fans: A Reliable Partner in Extreme Environments
To achieve such efficient and stable operation, Vilpe Sense's core components are crucial. After careful selection, Lahti and his R&D team ultimately selected ebm-papst's RadiCal series EC fans. This fan is not only economical and energy-efficient, but also extremely durable, perfectly suited to Finland's harsh and extreme climate. The temperature of building insulation can fluctuate wildly, ranging from -40°C to +50°C, placing extremely high demands on the equipment's weather resistance. ebm-papst's RadiCal fan, having undergone rigorous testing and years of field-proven operation, maintains stable and reliable performance even in such extreme environments.
Furthermore, this fan operates with exceptionally low noise levels, making it particularly suitable for installation on rooftops in noise-sensitive locations such as residential and office buildings. It produces no disruptive noise, achieving the perfect balance between functionality and comfort.
The Vilpe Sense system is currently in use in several factories and schools in Finland, effectively addressing the problem of water damage on flat roofs. "Water damage caused by deteriorating flat roofs is more common than people think, and even new buildings can't completely avoid it," Lahti shared. "At various industry seminars, I often ask attendees if they have seen cleaners putting buckets of water on leaking roofs, and nearly half of them raise their hands to say they have." However, with the promotion and application of the Vilpe Sense system, such scenes are gradually becoming history - cleaners no longer need to rely on placing buckets of water to temporarily deal with roof leaks, and buildings' moisture-proof safety has a smarter and longer-term guarantee.
