Horizontal Air Circulation Fans for Greenhouses

11/03/2026

Horizontal circulation fans move air within a greenhouse to help reduce local differences in the growing environment. Their role is internal circulation, which must be considered alongside any equipment that introduces outdoor air, removes moisture or supplies heating and cooling.

For growers and greenhouse equipment buyers, a useful fan selection starts with the crop space and intended circulation pattern. The objective is to move air through the relevant growing area without leaving persistent still zones or creating unsuitable local air speeds.

Distinguish circulation from air exchange

A circulation fan redistributes air already inside the structure. It does not, on its own, replace that air with fresh outdoor air or remove water vapor from the greenhouse. Those functions depend on the wider climate system and operating strategy.

This distinction helps when diagnosing an uneven environment. A circulation layout may improve mixing, but persistent excess moisture may also require changes to ventilation, heating or dehumidification. Increasing circulation speed alone is not a complete response to every climate problem.

Plan a route around the crop

Greenhouse dimensions, partitions and crop height influence how air moves. Fan placement should create a deliberate path rather than several strong jets that interfere with one another. Growing conditions also change as plants develop and obstruct more of the available space.

Assess the layout at crop level as well as near the roof. A fan can create visible air movement above the plants while leaving sheltered areas below. Check representative locations and revisit the arrangement when the crop canopy changes substantially.

Compare useful delivery at the application

Airflow volume and the distance over which a fan can maintain useful movement are different selection considerations. Accessories and the installed environment influence the resulting pattern. Do not convert a maximum airflow rating directly into a universal spacing distance.

ebm-papst has documented greenhouse horizontal circulation using AxiCool fans adapted for the application. That example establishes a use case for the series, but a standard refrigeration version should not be assumed to have the same environmental configuration as the greenhouse version.

Check the greenhouse environment

Humidity, condensation, sunlight and cleaning practices affect the suitability of the assembly. Review the permitted conditions for the specific fan, cable arrangement and mounting. Any exposure to agricultural chemicals also needs to be considered against the product documentation.

Maintain access without obstructing the crop or normal work routes. Inspection should include guards, mounting security and contamination that could affect airflow or balance. Follow the equipment instructions when cleaning or isolating the fans.

Discuss a greenhouse circulation requirement

Provide APAC FAN with greenhouse dimensions, crop height, existing fan details and the intended circulation arrangement. Include the supply and control requirements and describe the environmental exposure. Leave your email or WhatsApp number for product information and selection support based on the proposed installation.
