What is an IP rating?

The IP rating (short for Ingress Protection) is a way of showing how well an electrical enclosure protects against foreign objects.The IP rating consists of the letters IP (Ingress Protection) and two digits. These two digits are used to specify the level of protection.

The first digit indicates the extent to which the device is protected against fine dust, or against people in a sealed environment. i indicates the level of protection against the ingress of solid foreign objects, up to a maximum level of 6;

The second digit indicates the level of waterproofing of the device. p represents the level of protection against water ingress, up to a maximum level of 8.

For example, the 3312U axial fan has an IP68 rating.

The first digit (protection class for electrical equipment and foreign objects) is 6, indicating complete dust protection;

You can refer to the pictures below:

The second digit (waterproof protection level of the electrical equipment) is 8: This means that it can be used even if it is submerged in water for a long period of time under a certain pressure.

The protection level of the fan is IP56/IP54/IP23/IP67/IP68, etc.
